Whether you need a machine that can mold, haul, lift heavy objects, split, dig or simply move, you just might need a machine using hydraulic drive systems. First of all, the term hydraulics should be clear: a topic belonging to applied science and engineering, it deals with the mechanical properties that fluids have. A hydraulic drive system represents a drive or transmission system that makes use of pressurized hydraulic fluid in order to drive hydraulic machinery. There are 3 parts that can describe a hydraulic drive system: the generator – which can be a hydraulic pump, on which this article will focus – that can be driven by an electric motor, a windmill or a combustion engine; parts that are meant to guide and manage the system, such as filters, pipes and valves; the motor, whose purpose is to drive the machinery, and which can be a hydraulic motor or maybe a hydraulic cylinder. Power is transferred within the machinery via hydraulic fluids, which are usually based on mineral oil or on water.
There are two types of hydraulic pumps, the hydrostatic and the hydrodynamic ones. Categorizing hydraulic pumps, we can also name these types: gear pumps, screw pumps, radial piston pumps, rotary vane pumps, bent axis pumps and peristaltic pumps.
A simple idea lies behind any hydraulic system: by use of a fluid that cannot be compressed, force that is applied on a certain surface of the fluid can be transmitted to another surface of the fluid. The common case is that the force is multiplied given this process.
Taking vane pumps into account, they come in several configurations: sliding vane, swinging vane, rolling, external or flexible vane. Some of their advantages are that they can handle thin liquids at somewhat higher pressures, they can maintain peak performance on non-lubricating liquids as they present no internal metal-to-metal contact and they produce good vacuum. On the disadvantages side, some of them are that vane pumps are neither appropriate for high viscosity nor for use of abrasives.
Equipment that can depend on hydraulic drive systems includes backhoes, power steering systems, excavators, elevators, brakes, flight control systems in aircraft, loaders. Construction sites are a good place to find machines depending on hydraulic pumps. These machines are usually quite big and big hydraulic machines need a lot of oil (hydraulic fluid) and large external reservoirs. The reservoirs are meant to hold the displaced volume of oil.
Some pump brands should probably be named and Yuken and Vickers are worth mentioning. Having distributors in the U.S., in Canada, but also in the UK and on the Asian continent, Yuken is into hydraulic honing machines since 1940, and other applications related to hydraulics have been developed by them since then.
